Scientists and other experts have a vital role to play in helping the public have their say on potentially controversial areas of science and technology before major policy decisions are made.
They provide not just factual information about the science or technology being discussed, but are on hand to answer questions, be challenged on their research, and explain how science is controlled and regulated in the UK.
Scientists are also citizens themselves and taking part in public dialogue activities allows them to explore their own social and ethical perspectives on scientific issues.
