Background

The purpose of this project is to help the Environment Agency, Office for Nuclear Regulation and Natural Resources Wales better understand the needs of members of the public in relation to engagement in the GDA of new nuclear reactor designs, by engaging in a dialogue with members of the public.

The project helps address a suggestion in the independent evaluation of the Environment Agency’s previous GDA engagement and consultation arrangements, that the EA should seek to make information more accessible to ordinary local residents and groups who are among the target audiences for consultation. The Sciencewise project will help to address this in a systematic way.

Aims and objectives

The key objectives for the elements of the public dialogue covered by the Sciencewise grant are to:

1.    Inform the Environment Agency (EA), Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) and Natural Resources Wales (NRW) current and future public engagement, and EA and NRW’s consultation approach on Generic Design Assessments (GDA)

2.    Identify approaches that will address issues and barriers to sharing complex technical information on the GDA with members of the public

3.    Develop and pilot materials on the GDA that are accessible to the public

4.    Identify potential public engagement process options for the GDA

5.    Help the nuclear regulators to pilot an effective public engagement and EA and NRW consultation approach, during the current assessment of Hitachi-GE’s UK Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (UK ABWR).
